Greyhound Handicapping - Trying to Win

Greyhound Dog Racing Tips.

If you've been a greyhound handicapper for a while, you may not pay much attention to the program comments. After all, there's only so many times you can read that a dog "gained in the stretch" or had a "rough trip early and late" before your eyes start to glaze over.

You should read the comments though, and here's why. They often hold the key to the secret of which greyhound is going to win the race you're handicapping. Some comments can tell you which dog is going to try to win and which dog isn't.

When a dog runs a race where it tries and doesn't quite make it, it often wins its next race. But, sometimes it's hard to tell whether it put out a good effort in a race. If it came in 4th by 5 lengths, how do you know whether it was really trying or whether it was just that the other dogs faded at the end of the race?

Well, sometimes, you can tell by the comment for that race. If you read that the dog "tried hard", "closed in the stretch", was "driving", or something similar, you'll have a pretty good idea that the dog was trying to win. This is an indication that the dog will try in this race also, and may do it this time.

If you're wondering whether a dog has the potential to win, look for positive comments. Also look for a gain in position at the end of the race or a fast break when the dog hasn't been breaking. All of these things can tell you that a dog is going to be ready to do better in its next race.
