Enjoying Greyhounds As Pets

Greyhound Dog Racing Tips.

There are a number of opportunities out there for people to end up with a Greyhound as their family pet. Greyhounds can be bought directly from a pet store or dog breeder, and can also be adopted away from the dog racing industry. Whether introduced to the family as a puppy or as an adopted adult pet, Greyhounds have a fine ability to integrate into almost any family situation.

There are a number of traits that make a Greyhound a great pet. They are pack oriented dogs and this helps them adapt to families and form strong bonds with all members. They can become extremely protective of children and usually have no problem forming bonds with other dogs that are already in the home. Due to their friendliness to strangers, Greyhounds are usually not the best choice for security dogs. Greyhounds also lack an undercoat which means that although they shed, they are not very likely to irritate those that have pet allergies. Pet owners are often cautioned against owning a Greyhound unless they have a good deal of open space. The truth is though that these dogs can live in small spaces quite well, even functioning good as apartment dogs. In fact, Greyhounds bark very little and this is another reason they do well in dense urban settings.

There are things to be concerned with for those looking to adopt a Greyhound as a pet. Greyhounds cannot be left unattended in wide open outdoor settings as they are not usually very street aware and have a tendency to chase small animals. This can lead to them being injured or killed often as a result of being hit by a moving vehicle. The lack of an undercoat also means that Greyhounds can get quite cold in cold weather locations. Because of their lean bodies and lack of a thick coat, Greyhounds should be provided with a soft comfortable bed to sleep on as a hard floor can cause them irritation, sores, and even injury over time.

Greyhounds are great animals and make great pets. Their loyalty and friendliness makes them a great choice for a family pet. Those looking at adopting a Greyhound that has led a life in the dog racing world should have very few worries due to their pet selection.
